THE COLLABORATIVE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME HELPS STRENGTHEN GLOBAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIPS.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs successfully hosted a Study Abroad Programme in partnership with the Rutgers University School of Public Health (RUSPH) from March 17 to 21, 2025.

The team led by Dr. Merlene Frederick James, and supported by Dr. Leslie Kantor, and Christina Rosario through a collaborative engagement brought together 19 graduate students from the Urban Global Public Health Department of RUSPH, accompanied by faculty members for a comprehensive immersion into Saint Lucia’s public health system.

During the five-day initiative, students participated in a series of in-depth presentations, site visits, and knowledge exchanges aimed at broadening their understanding of global public health systems. The visiting students interacted with public health professionals from the Ministry of Health and were exposed to Saint Lucia’s epidemiological profile, disaster management frameworks, research ethics, environmental health systems, maternal and child health strategies, and the pursuit of universal health coverage.

The week also featured a well-attended CME session by Professor Leslie Kantor, who presented “Maternal Health in the USA: New Jersey as a Case Study” to over 160 Saint Lucian health practitioners.

Outside of sessions, the group explored Saint Lucia’s culture and natural beauty—visiting Pigeon Island, the Sulphur Springs, and the Castries Craft Market.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sharon Belmar-George welcomed the Rutgers team, highlighting the program’s role in deepening academic and health system collaborations. The Ministry of Health expresses heartfelt thanks to the RUSPH team and looks forward to building on this meaningful partnership.
